The former King Edwards Girls' and Boys' Schools, these buildings became home to the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion from Feb to May 1945. A Black and Latina unit of the US Women's Army Corps, the battalion's role was to sort the enormous postal backlog. Given six months for the task, the women completed it in three.
